My Best Friend’s Wedding: Prologue | Karishma

Haha. My best friend. I sound more 16 than 26, don’t I? 🙂

Everyone starts off their childhood with one best friend. That first best friend. If you’ve changed schools, or cities – you’ll know it means: enter best friend #2. Then college brings you a new best friend, and maybe you were lucky enough to find another one at your new work place, or your second college.

As life goes on, you add best friends to your list. Though once you hit your twenties, the phrase slowly makes its way out of your vocabulary, and you’re introducing him or her as “one of my closest friends”. But in your head, you’re still saying “my best friend”. It never gets old, does it?

So. My best friend is getting married. My best friend since 7th Grade. Oh, we’ve seen each other through pretty much everything. All the chaos of teenage years, trying to grow up in college, first employments, struggling with career decisions (or, the what-the-heck-am-I-supposed-to-do-with-my-life phase) and the incredible insanity of getting married.

Her big day is almost here. In under a month, she’ll be changing her Facebook status to Married. My best friend, is getting married.

Preparations for her roka began at a frantic pace in March. She was still living in Singapore, and her then-boyfriend was in the US. They decided on a date when both of them could be here in Delhi, and in the blink of an eye – the roka was just 3 weeks away.

We’d begun preparations a few weeks earlier, when I’d introduced her to the beautiful world of Pinterest and started researching photographers and makeup artists with her. Before she landed in Delhi 7 days before her Roka, I’d already been to several Shahpur Jat stores with her mom, booked a candid photographer we loved, and crossed my fingers that the makeup artist we’d just paid an advance to was as good in person as she was in pictures. What followed was a week of buying her roka outfit, her pre-roka party outfit (YES!), getting a makeup-trial, finding her jewellery, deciding what the heck I was going to wear, finding a 30 year old sari to re-use, two consecutive nights of dancing into the wee hours of the morning and wondering “did she just get married cos that did not feel like just a roka!”

With less than a month to go for her wedding, there’s so much preparation left to do. Not hers, mine! Well, hers too. But with the kind of year I’ve had – going to New York, trying to get the blog in order while simultaneously wedding shopping with Karishma – I’ve just realised how close her wedding is and how awfully late I am with all the preparations I needed to do to attend it.
